A Potty Training Poem - The Month Before New Year

By Teri Crane

'Twas the month before New Year, and through day and night,
Our toddler stayed dry – it was such a delight!                             Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day - Teri Crane

His pull-ups were stacked in the closet with care
And we fervently hoped that they could stay there.

The potty chart sparkled with stickers and stars,
A clear indication that success was ours!

But as the holidays approached and our son’s excitement grew,
the near misses increased and he had not one accident, but two!

The first one I admit I could have probably prevented
Had I insisted that he "try" to go, but instead, I relented.

We had passed a restroom and he said he was fine
But five minutes later, as we were standing in line,
He started to fidget and squirm and dance around,
And next thing I knew, there was a puddle on the ground.

The second accident was twice as bad,
But he was so upset when it happened, that I couldn’t be mad.
He had just used the potty, as he knew he should,
And he was very proud that he had been so good.

He had been wishing and waiting for this very special day,
And his eyes were bright with wonder as Santa arrived in his sleigh.
The park was filled with excitement and good cheer,
As one child after another whispered into Santa’s ear.

And when our son climbed onto Santa’s lap,
It was a picture perfect moment that we were ready to snap,
When what to our wondering eyes did we see,
But a wide-eyed Santa and his very wet knee.

Our son burst into tears and leapt to his feet,
And dashed past the elves without getting his treat.

More rapid than eagles his little feet flew
And in that moment, I think we all knew,
That days like these, although they are few,
Are perfect for pull-ups and the job that they do.

But thankfully, Santa took it all in stride,
And he followed our son and knelt by his side,
Then he looked into his eyes and said with a smile,
"Learning new things always takes a little while."

"You’re a very good boy, and I’m happy to tell you
That you can be proud of doing the best you can do."
Then Santa gave him a hug and walked back to his sleigh,
Put a blanket on his lap and went on with his day.

But we heard him proclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"Happy Potty Training to all, and to all a dry night."
